Doggy Etiquette
Dogs like people vary greatly in personality there is no guarantee that they will automatically get along with every dog they meet.
Be considerate of other dogs and introduce your dog to new dogs carefully and wisely
When you first approach a new dog/puppy It is best to make the first meeting brief make your dog sit along the other dog and then separate the dogs again. You can reintroduce them a short period later and gradually build up the time until they have sorted out the hierarchy and are comfortable in each other’s company.
Make sure both dogs are on lead and that you can rely on the person holding the other dog to control it.
Dogs tend to lean one way or the other alpha or beta and this is not an age or size it is just the dogs essence.
Always be aware of any signs of tension between any dogs, for example: growling, hair rising along the back (heckles up) , prolonged staring, or baring of teethãall of which can build up to outward aggressiveness. Be sure to separate the two dogs before anything has time to escalates into a full-blown attack.
Do not allow your puppy / dog to jump up all over other dog/puppy – as the other dog may be older, have less patience for playful antics, the dog could be ill or even with pup.
If the other dog does seem to be playful (eg, low wagging tail, “play-bow” – front legs bent, bum in the air) then it maybe decided to let the two dogs play although make sure that things do not get too rough and that the other dog is not frightening your puppy /dog in any way (or that your puppy is not overwhelming the other dog with boisterous behaviour).
Very submissive dogs may display behaviour (such as rolling over and presenting their exposed belly, licking the lips of another dog, crouching low and wriggling on the ground) – this is good and is what puppies usually do when greeting an older dog.
Allow the dogs to sniff each other but make sure that if either dog shows any negative behaviour, such as growling, it is instantly removed and reprimanded.
Some dogs simply never “get along” &this is not a disaster – not all humans enjoy being with each other. You will find that your dog has certain dogs who seem particularly suited to his personality and he will play with and gel with them best., try and find these dogs out and stay with them if your dog does not gel with another dog and there is conflict between them please be sensible and keep your dog’s apart , as with people you cannot make your dog like a dog it doesn’t like you are just provoking unnecessary tension between the dogs and aggravating a potential fight this energy will then escalate and spread and cause unease and problems with all the dogs.
